Fullerton Transportation Center

In support of the Fullerton Transportation Center Specific Plan and Environmental Impact Report, Huitt-Zollars was retained to complete technical design studies and reports to support the public/private joint venture in the redevelopment of Fullerton’s Transportation Center. The 40-acre redevelopment area includes a number of new structures comprised of mixed-use residential, commercial, and retail businesses, including above and below ground parking garages. The project also includes new landscaping, roadway improvements, park areas, and renovations to the existing station.

95 Bus Stop Turnarounds

Huitt-Zollars prepared improvement plans for nine bus stop turnouts located in the county areas around Palmdale and Santa Clarita. The project was administered through Los Angeles County Department of Public Works Road Construction Program. The overall project included design survey, utility notifications, preparation of improvement plans and construction quantity, and cost estimates. The design survey and improvement plans required a 30-day preparation period. The design phase included utility research, notifications and collection of utility maps for each bus stop location.

West San Gabriel River Trail

This 17-acre greenbelt trail was developed out of a 200-foot-wide utility easement which provided a buffer between housing and a major river/flood control channel. This vacated corridor was transformed into a naturalized amenity that provides recreational opportunities for nearby residents as well as families city-wide. Huitt-Zollars prepared the civil construction plans, specifications and estimates.

Trancas Creek and Lagoon Feasibility Study

During the 1960’s, a two-section 2,000-foot concrete lined channel was added to Trancas Creek for flood control purposes. Time demonstrated that the concrete channels, drought-driven low water levels, and a road crossing culvert created significant fish barriers and negative impacts to the life cycle of natural creek and lagoon resources. The goal of the Trancas Creek and Lagoon Feasibility Study project conducted for the Resource Conservation District of the Santa Monica Mountains was to assess the removal of fish passage barriers and improving habitat for endangered aquatic species.

Oso and Marguerite Parkways Widening

Huitt-Zollars provided studies of final geometrics resulting in additions of one through-lane in each direction on Oso Parkway, right-turn only lanes in each direction on Marguerite Parkway, and double left-turn lanes covering four directions at an existing arterial highway intersection. Raised medians on four legs of the intersection were reconfigured. Design constraints included access to existing developments, adjacent hillside slope buttress, major water pressure reducing station, utility vaults, and facilities.

La Pata Extension Project

Huitt-Zollars prepared the plans, specifications, and estimates and right-of-way documents for this 3.7-mile roadway project, which eliminated a gap and added a connection in the County’s arterial highway system. Combining critical elements aided in: the operation within a landfill and the design of controlled access, widening an existing roadway section from three to five lanes, and pioneering a new roadway through undeveloped mountainous terrain with final roadway grades up to seven percent. Additional elements involved landslide remediation, bridge and tunnel construction, and the reloca

Bakersfield National Cemetery

Huitt-Zollars developed a Master Plan, prepared Construction Documents, and coordinated with a variety of state and federal agencies, for a new 500-acre national cemetery. Located southeast of Bakersfield, interments include veterans from World War II through the War on Global Terrorism. The cantilevered Committal Service Shelter is architecturally elegant and a unique structural challenge due to its thin profile, long span and the wind & seismic loading. The cemetery design reflects environmental sensitivity to the region’s natural resources, topography, geology and vegetation.
