Our History
Huitt-Zollars: Designing What’s Next Since 1975.
In 1975, Larry Huitt and Bob Zollars founded our firm based on a vision that still drives us today: to improve the spaces where people live, work, and come together to forge rich, vibrant communities. What began with shop drawings and title surveys has grown into a nationally respected multidisciplinary firm—trusted by local institutions and recognized for iconic projects like the Houston Astrodome and the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge.
At every step, we’ve remained true to our founding principles—delivering thoughtful design, uncompromising quality, and sophisticated solutions tailored to our partners’ needs. And we do all of this with a personal touch that’s rare in a firm our size.
Enduring Principles. Evolving Expertise.
Our history is built on a foundation of sound design and rigorous engineering, held together by a genuine curiosity and deep empathy for the communities we serve. Our first structural job, a 10-story building in Dallas, taught us the enduring value of precision in a demanding climate. Our first major project, a 47-mile road in Nigeria, allowed us to bring our expertise to new markets and adapt to economic changes without sacrificing the quality of our services. In 1985, we appeared on ENR’s Top 500 list for the first time, and we’ve been there ever since.
Today, we are a prominent multidisciplinary AE firm whose work spans architecture, engineering, planning, and beyond—serving public and private partners around the country. From hotels and amusement parks to senior centers and neighborhood schools, every project reflects our commitment to striking the perfect balance of technical excellence and mindful design. At Huitt-Zollars, our expertise continues to evolve to match the dynamic needs of our partners and the unique places they call home. As we evolve, we carry with us the principles that started it all: listen closely, collaborate openly, and leave the built environment safer and more efficient than it was yesterday.
