Huitt-Zollars provided 100% design and construction documentation for a design-bid-build aircraft operations and support facility at Biggs Army Airfield (BAAF), including military airfield pavements and two Aircraft Arresting Systems (AAS) located at each end of Runway 3-21. The AAS includes the BAK 12 system, which uses a steel cable and absorber machines to safely decelerate aircraft during emergency landings. To address issues such as pavement erosion and cable damage caused by the BAK 12, our team integrated the BAK 14 system—a recessed steel trough with lifting mechanisms that deploy the BAK 12 only when needed. This dual-system approach enhances runway durability and operational safety.
