Joint Venture Partner Huitt-Zollars is currently delivering four design-bid-build RFP packages for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Fort Worth District as part of a Civil Works program focused on restoring the Westside Creeks in San Antonio, Texas—specifically Alazán, Apache, Martinez, and San Pedro Creeks. These waterways had been ecologically degraded due to flood risk management measures such as channelization and vegetation removal. The project aims to restore the riverine ecosystem by reintroducing riparian woody meadow (RWV) vegetation, constructing a continuous pilot channel (PC), and creating slackwater (SW) areas along the creek banks. Additionally, a hike and bike trail is being added to Martinez Creek to align with the trail systems of the other creeks, enhancing both ecological function and community recreation.
