The I-35/US 183 Connector and Bridge Improvements project aimed to enhance safety, mobility, and connectivity in north Austin, particularly between I-35 and US 183. The project addressed critical issues such as lane merging and weaving, frontage road intersection operations, and the functionality of existing direct connectors.

Huitt-Zollars served as the structural lead, delivering final design services for key infrastructure elements including two new direct connectors (I-35 south to US 183 south and north), the St. John’s Avenue bridges, and the widening of the I-35 southbound main lane bridge over US 290. A comprehensive Bridge Type Study was conducted to evaluate structure options—such as steel tub girders, prestressed concrete U-beams, and precast segmental elements—based on cost, constructability, aesthetics, and TxDOT preferences.

The design ensured that both the substructure and superstructure aesthetics aligned with the existing interchange, while also improving traffic flow, structural integrity, and long-term operational efficiency.
